There was a time where being a DJ really just meant you had to play the shadows.
This is not true any longer. In our new era of music, DJs are becoming more visible, particularly with the success of DJs like Diplo and Skrillex.
One of the DJs we’re feeling right now is the stylish and musically talented DJ Brendan Fallis.
Even though he is a busy dude (he’s Theophilus London’s DJ), Brendan found time to answer a couple of questions ranging from what the hottest club in NYC is, to his most memorable party.

As an open-format DJ, you play different genres of music like electro, house, rock, and hip-hop, etc. Do you have a favorite style of music?
I don’t really have one favorite style of music. Every style of music is amazing in so many different ways. It’s more about finding what you like and what makes sense with your own mind.
We understand you’re the official DJ for Theophilus London. How is it working with him?
It’s a great relationship working with Theophilus. He’s a very inspiring artist to work around, with a very strong work ethic. It makes you focused and driven to push yourself and everyone on the team around us further. He’s also super creative, so it brings out a good side in myself to keep my creativity flowing.
You’re the official Vogue DJ, how does fashion play a part in the world of DJing?
Fashion plays a big part in the world of DJing. It’s getting more relevant for DJ’s to care about fashion, and it’s certainly fashionable to be a DJ at this time. I think that what fashion really does for DJing–it gives you a sense of style that carries through your music and helps you stay progressive all around.
What advice would you give aspiring and up-and-coming DJ’s who want to make a name for themselves?
Work hard, be polite and follow up with everyone you work with. All DJs get to a certain skill level after you put in a certain amount of time learning the craft, but it’s your networking that will get you to places you didn’t imagine.
What’s the hottest venue to DJ in New York?
For a big club, 1OAK continues to hold the crown in New York for hip-hop. But for a cooler, tight door and more interesting crowd, it would have to be Acme downstairs or the recently opened Bow on Bowery.
If you could teach a course on DJing, what course would you teach?
Hmmm that’s a tough one. I’m not even close to the best at scratching or being a technical DJ, but can definitely teach someone all the necessary basics to jump start their skill level, and how to make great song selections from one to the next while transitioning well between the two using a variety of different techniques.
What makes DJ Brendan Fallis a one of a kind DJ?
Every DJ is successful in their own right. The only thing that defines us from each other is the same thing which defines us as humans: style, drive, passion and dedication. I just focus on making sure I’m continually progressing and evolving and hope that people keep enjoying the music.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three albums would you bring?
Classic question, and so tough as we now live in a world where very few full albums are purchased. Notorious B.I.G Ready to Die, Bob Marley Legend and lastly, the Big Chill soundtrack.
What’s been the most memorable party/event you’ve DJed?
Last year I DJed the Alexander Wang after party during fashion week, which would have to
be up there as one of the most memorable. Also, the Victoria’s Secret after party, which I think would reign number one. Pretty self-explanatory.
