An aspiring poet and high school student was suspended for a personal poem she wrote about why Adam Lanza murdered 27 people in Newtown, Conn.

Courtni Webb, 17-years-old, who says she writes poetry to express herself, told NBC that she was trying to convey “her belief that tragedies in Sandy Hook happen because people feel helpless.”
“I understand the killings in Connecticut. I know why he pulled the trigger,” wrote Courtni Webb.
“Why are we oppressed by a dysfunctional community of haters and blamers?”
When a teacher found her personal notebook, the poem was reported to school authorities, which led the Life Learning Academy on Treasure Island, San Francisco, to suspend her.
The school, which prides itself on helping students who are not able to assimilate and settle in other schooling establishments, is currently evaluating if Webb is a threat to her fellow students. But Webb contends that her poem is being overanalyzed.
“For example, the only person I can think of would be like Stephen King. He writes weird stuff all the time. That doesn’t mean he’s gonna do it or act it out,” said Webb.
“I feel like they’re over reacting. Why? Because my daughter doesn’t have a history of violence. She didn’t threaten anybody. She didn’t threaten herself. She simply said she understood why,” said her mother, Valerie Statham.

Hmmm…is it too soon to talk about Sandy Hook in that way, or is it never acceptable to feel empathy for the killer?
