One encounters more than enough hurdles when they make the decision to live a cruelty-free lifestyle, and one of the first steps is nixing fur from their wardrobes. But who can you trust when the labels lie?!

According to disturbing new reports, major retailers were caught passing off real fur as faux fur and duping thousands into purchasing and wearing real fur with faux labeling.

The real “faux” fur was brought into the spotlight earlier this week when Neiman Marcus, Eminent and DrJays.com revealed that they had marketed real fur – from rabbit, raccoon and, possibly, dyed mink – as faux fur.

It may sound like a silly game, but contrary to popular belief, it turns out the real thing may be a little more cost effective.

As reported by the New York Times:

On the face of it, the real-for-fake switch might not seem to make business sense. But because many people are no longer buying real fur, manufacturers and retailers are scrambling to meet growing demand for faux fur. As a result, some products are being mislabeled.

“The lines between real and fake have gotten really blurry,” said Dan Mathews, a senior vice president with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “In this global marketplace, there are fur farms in China that raise dogs for clothing that is labeled as fake fur here in the U.S. because that’s what the market best responds to.”

Not cool at all.

PETA advises those living cruelty-free to stay away from fur products unless they can be 100 percent sure that it is indeed all faux.
