U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton was a national hero yesterday for immigrants around the country. Bolton was the judge that blocked the immigration law SB 1070 that would require AZ police officials to stop, question and ask for documentation of Arizona citizens who they think might be undocumented immigrants.

Bolton delayed provisions that required immigrants to carry their papers and banned undocumented immigrants.  The judge also blocked officers from making warrant-less arrests of suspected undocumented immigrants for crimes that can lead to deportation.

Bolton wrote ‘Requiring Arizona law enforcement officials and agencies to determine the immigration status of every person who is arrested burdens lawfully present aliens because their liberty will be restricted while their status is checked.’ We couldn’t agree more.

We have to remember that Bolton’s ruling does not stop the entire SB 1070 law, it only prevents the most damaging aspects against undocumented immigrants from going into effect today.

From April 29th to July 29th, this bill has been debated at every angle, from Sarah Palin proclaiming that ‘Every state should be like Arizona’ to President Obama inviting the Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer to the White House to discuss the unjust bill.  President Obama has said on record that the law was misguided and it’s the wrong approach to illegal immigration.

And President Obama is correct.  This law is out right unconstitutional and racist in it’s intentions.  A state cannot be allowed to single out a group of people based on ethnicity and citizenship to harass citizens. If this law would to continue this would create an enormous powder keg in Arizona.

How many times can someone be stopped by the cops without getting angry? How many times will the citizens of Arizona put up with being harassed by police officers.

Imagine an Arizona citizen leaving his home to go to work and on his way he’s stopped by police.  He shows the officer his I.D. and is told to go on his way.  He gets to work and does what he has to do. He puts in his twelve hour day goes home and get’s stopped again.  This time by a different officer only to explain he has been stopped already. How many times in a given week can anyone take of this sort of harassment? In a given week a citizen may be stopped several times a week, enough to make anyone go crazy.

The fight isn’t over yet.  U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton only slowed down the process.  The fight is still ahead of us and we must continue to fight for those who do not have a voice. Let’s keep the fight going.
