The Newsroom returned last night with a bang!

The hit HBO show kicked off its second season, as Olivia Munn, Alison Pill and Jeff Daniels dusted off their characters of Sloan Sabbith, Maggie Jordan and star Will McAvoy, respectively.

The show follows a television news station and tackles major issues, mixing real events with fictional storylines, becoming both a popular show and a poignant reminder of real life.

This episode, The Newsroom touched on Occupy Wall Street, leaks in the White House and more.

But after the events of this weekend following the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman case, we’re hoping The Newsroom picks up the issue of discrimination.

Here are 10 reasons why we think The Newsroom should feature the George Zimmerman trial on the show.

Having such a topic on a show full of mostly white faces would push the envelope and shock people like this.

The world is dying to know what Sloan Sabbith thinks of the case that rocked the nation. She makes nerds look good, so it would be amazing to see where a scholar like her would land on the situation.

After the verdict was announced, we all felt like falling on the floor in disbelief. It would be even better to see an interpretation of the personal opinions of journalists who have to play it straight. Especially when the people who produce shows may have a different viewpoint than the host.

If we saw the case mentioned on such a smart show, dealt with in a thought-provoking manner, we’d probably react like this…This could very well be next season’s American Taliban moment.

After Zimmerman’s lawyers’ distasteful celebration, we wished someone on his team would have said this:

While Will McAvoy is a Republican, we still think he would have been on the right side of justice. He once said: “First of all, I am a registered Republican. I only seem liberal because I believe that hurricanes are caused by high barometric pressure and not gay marriage.” We wished more Republicans could think like McAvoy.

We’re pretty sure Maggie would have convinced Jim to join her during a Trayvon Martin rally. We’d love to see a love story kick off between these two after a kiss during a Trayvon protest.

Lastly, because all of these people are dying to see this topic handled the right way.

In the meantime, The Newsroom is going to touch on the Troy Davis case! So we have some hope.
