While most people are spending Christmas at home with their families, a team of local investigators is spending their holiday investigating the shooting death of a 2-month-old baby.

The 2-month-old girl was killed in a shooting on Christmas Eve by a single gunshot wound she sustained while inside an apartment building. The girl was shot at 2:25 p.m. by a family member who was left alone with the child, officials say.

First responders did their best to revive the girl, but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead after arriving at Lancaster General Hospital.

As of this morning, no one was charged in the shooting.

Lancaster online reports:

“A local forensic team was at the apartment into Christmas morning, collecting evidence and taking photographs of the shooting scene.

Also, detectives were interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses Tuesday night into the morning.

Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said the girl’s family, including the suspected shooter, has been cooperative.

However, Stedman said it’s too early to call the shooting an accident.”

“Obviously, we are investigating exactly how it took place,” Stedman said early this morning.

He also said the location of the child’s wound would not be revealed Christmas day; More details will be available after an autopsy is completed Thursday.

If her death is ruled a homicide, the unidentified girl will be the third child killed under two-years-old in Pennsylvania.

“Not sure I can really articulate just how tragic it is that a 2-moth-old baby was shot dead on Christmas Eve,” Stedman said.

More details to come.
