Outkast. Outkast. Outkast.

That’s all anyone has been able to talk about after Coachella revealed that the iconic rap group will be the closing act of day one of this year’s festival.

(The act will also be the Governors Ball closer).

And we can understand it: this is big. Not just for rap music, but for pop music in general. In their prime, music didn’t get more inventive, and just downright catchy, than Outkast. From 1994 to 2004, an argument can be made that the group released four masterpieces: SouthernplayalisticadillacmuzikATLiensAquemini and Stankonia.

Here’s the thing, though: it wouldn’t be fair to talk about Outkast without talking about their roots. When talking about Outkast, you have to mention Dungeon Family: rap group Goodie Mob, producers Organized Noize, Cool Breeze, Witchdoctor, producer Mr. DJ, Slimm Calhoun, Killer Mike, Bubba Sparxxx, Bobby V, Janelle Monáe and Future.

Amazingly, all these acts came from the same Dungeon Family tree. That tree started in the early ’90s, when a couple of Atlanta teens, André “André 3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton, started a rap group, got signed to LaFace records and dropped a classic.

The release of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik would start a floodgate of soulful, bluesy rap music, like Goodie Mob’s Still Standing and Cool Breeze’s East Point’s Greatest Hits.

Even after the crew’s ’90s run was over, second generation Dungeon members like Killer Mike and Future kept things going with their own classics.

So celebrate Outkast and Dungeon Family with us by listening to our massive Dungeon Family playlist and clicking through the gallery below.
