At this point, we should just be comfortable with one fact: every time Beyonce makes a statement, we will be talking about it for days. Her most recent appearance at the 56th Annual Grammys is proof of that…we’re still reeling over her barely there Michael Costello dress.

As with most things Bey, this whole production that landed her on almost every Grammy best dressed list wasn’t an on-a-whim number, it was carefully orchestrated by her super stylist Ty Hunter and Project Runway alum Costello, who admits he made SIX dresses for Bey with just four days until the Grammys – before settling on the perfect gown that has yet to walk down any runway.

People Magazine caught up with the designer to talk all things Beyonce’s dress. Check out the exclusive below.

On his chance encounter with Ty Hunter:

“I know that she could have any designer in the world make her anything she wants — I never thought he was going to call,” Costello says of a chance encounter with Hunter at a party. “He came into the showroom [four days before the Grammys], and he was loving everything. He had a direction he wanted to go in, which was ‘Shut s–t down’ and ‘Nakedness.”

On Ty’s initial reaction to “the” dress for Beyonce in his showroom:

“When he saw that dress, his heart stopped. He was like, ‘Yes God, this is the moment!’”

On making alternative options for Beyonce after Ty picked the first dress:

“Coming from the television shows, I wanted to impress people in a way,” he explained. “I stopped what I was doing and made six more dresses as options. I think it’s because I love a challenge so much. Maybe it gets my adrenaline going.”

But as these things typically go, Michael had no idea Beyonce was going to wear the dress until he spotted an Insta-teaser from Ty on Instagram and 20 minutes later, he saw the photos of Beyonce perfectly clad in his design on the red carpet.

Was operation “Shut Shit Down” a success? Absolutely.
