The search for the missing 268 people who were aboard a ferry that sank Wednesday in South Korea continues, but prosecutors on land are searching for a different reason.
Authorities have asked a court to issue an arrest warrant for the captain of the ferry that sank after it was discovered an evacuation order by the captain could have saved lives.
Officials are also investigating the sharp turn the vessel took before it started listing. Earlier this week, it was revealed that a junior officer – and not the captain – was at the helm of the ferry when it capsized.
So far, 28 have been confirmed dead and 179 people have been rescued. Most of the missing are students from Danwon High School in Ansan, a suburb of Seoul, who were on an outing when the ferry sank.
Sadly, the vice principal of Danwon High School was found hanged in a possible suicide after he was rescued this week.
“The deputy head of this school saved himself on the ship but not his students,” a distraught woman at Danwon High School told NBC News. “No-one from this school is going to the hospital or the rescue area. Why not? Why aren’t you doing anything?”
A police officer said the vice principal, identified only by his surname Kang, was found dead on the island of Jindo where rescued passengers have been taken.
