Republicans from South Dakota are still furious over the release of American solider Bowe Bergdahl. So much so, they’re calling for the impeachment of President Obama.
According to Think Progress, the South Dakota GOP passed a resolution to remove the President from office. The resolution states that Obama violated his oath in office, listing some of his most controversial actions – from Obamacare to questions surrounding his birth certificate.
The resolution names Obama’s decision to trade five Taliban combatants for captive US soldier Bowe Bergdahl, his assertion that Americans who like their insurance can keep it under Obamacare, and the recent release by the Environmental Protection Agency of new regulations to cut carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants.
The resolution passed with 191 to 176 votes. But other members of the South Dakota cabinet are embarrassed:
“The South Dakota Republican Party has had many opportunities to put working families and the middle class first, but instead they want to impeach the President,” South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Deb Knecht said in a statement yesterday. She also called on Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Sen. John Thune (R-SD) to reject the resolution.
Congressional Republicans have formerly tried to impeach the President over the “validity” of his birth certificate and his stance on gay marriage.
The only two presidents that have ever been impeached by the House include Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. Both votes were acquitted when the Senate did not reach the two-thirds vote requirement.
Many have argued that Obama is not the first president to exchange detainees for American soldiers. In 1985, the Reagan administration sold missiles to Tehran to insure the partial release of seven American hostages in Lebanon. President Bill Clinton was in talks with the Taliban in order for them to hand over Osama Bin Laden and other members of al-Qaeda in the 1990s.
