Two weeks after her mother’s passing, Melissa Rivers is breaking her silence.

Rivers took to WhoSay to express her gratitude to everyone who offered “kindness and support” to her and her 13-year-old son Cooper in the days that followed her mother Joan Rivers‘ sudden death. Joan underwent throat surgery days before her passing in an attempt to help diagnose her hoarse voice and sore throat. During the procedure, the 81-year-old stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest.

“As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media,” she wrote.

“My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time. We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother’s legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many.”

Melissa and Cooper bid a final farewell to Joan at a star-studded, laughter-filled funeral on September 7.

Joan’s daughter and grandson aren’t the only ones struggling to move on in the wake of her death. Rivers’ E! and Fashion Police family has planned a full day of special programming, during which they’ll be celebrating “Joan Day” to honor the late comedienne.

On Friday, September 19, the network has planned an all-day Fashion Police marathon to showcase Joan’s best jokes. Joan’s daughter Melissa will join the show’s hosts, Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic, and George Kotsiopoulos for a 90-minute show reflecting on her lengthy career.
