As Toronto Mayor Rob Ford undergoes chemotherapy for a rare form of cancer, the normally upbeat politician urged voters to support his brother Doug Ford in the upcoming election.

According to Gawker, the now raspy-sounding Ford released an audio recording just hours before his chemotherapy to treat the malignant liposarcoma tumors in his abdomen and a planned biopsy for a tumor in his left buttock.

In the recording, Ford thanks his supporters for their prayers and expressed his wish for people to support Doug – who took his place in the upcoming Toronto mayoral election.

“In a few hours I will begin my chemotherapy,” he said.  “Then I will spend the next little while, with my family, focused on getting better. But, I would like to speak directly to the people in our city before I do that. …

For the past 14 years, as Councillor and as Mayor, I have worked hard to bring about change at City Hall and make life a little bit easier for the average hard working people of Toronto. I was not alone in this, my brother Doug was by my side, sharing my vision, fighting for the great people of Toronto. I never could have accomplished what we did without him.

Doug loves our city as much as I do. He’s prepared to tackle the issues head on.

Last week I asked my brother to carry the torch and continue the work we started … Toronto needs Doug Ford.”

Ford, who was the center of controversy for his drug use, pulled out of the race last week and announced his diagnosis Thursday.

The mayor will go through 18 days of chemo with a small break, before beginning another 18 days of treatment. Since the cancer has over 60 cells, it will be difficult to treat.

Doug will run for office in the October 27 election.
