The terrorist group Boko Haram has torched the Nigerian town of Baga, leaving some 2,000 people missing and feared dead.

The killing spree has been ongoing since the militant group overran a nearby military base on Saturday. In the past year, Boko Haram has raided many towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria, including taking hundreds of schoolgirls and boys hostage and selling them for profit.

According to Borno senator Ahmed Zanna, the town – which had a population of about ten thousand – is now desolate and non-existent.

“These towns are just gone, burned down,” he told NBC News via telephone.

“The whole area is covered in bodies.”

It’s been said the militants chased people out of Baga before returning to kill those left and torch the buildings to the ground, according to survivors who contacted Zanna.

“This is one of the worst attacks I’ve seen because so many people are unaccounted for and feared dead,” said Zanna, who was elected in 2011.

As of Thursday, Boko Haram has set up checkpoints and killed anyone hiding in the bushes. People are fleeing to neighboring towns such as Chad and Maiduguri to escape the violence and some have even drowned crossing Lake Chad.

The Multinational Joint Task Force, set up a year ago to fight trans-border crime in the Lake Chad region, has failed to fight the attacks brought on by Boko Haram, even though they recently made a promise to do so.

Nigeria is expected to hold general elections on February 14. Many people in the northeast fear that because of the attacks, they will not be able to travel to voting areas.
