It’s been a couple of months since the tragic death of A$AP Mob’s co-founder A$AP Yams, and the news is still a fresh wound for the members of the hip-hop group.
A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg attended the SXSW festivities in Austin this last week, and they reflected on his legacy with a number of outlets, and even talked about their upcoming music that fans are eager to hear.
Rocky spoke on his death to MTV News while in his rented house in Austin:
“I just lost my brother. F–k all this music sh-t. When it comes down to it, would I trade this music for Yams? Yes,” he admitted. “Because in all reality. Yams is the only person that’s actually been through this sh-t with me and knows how I feel.”
He also went into detail on Yams’ past drug use, and how it played a part in his death:
“By August, it was just me and Yams out there, and we were working, and he started getting back on his blackout boy sh-t.”
“Everything comes with consequences. I lost my brother.”
“[Yams] was my partner in this sh-t. He’s the person I knew when I was broke, that was helping me when we didn’t know what was going to happen. So many people are willing to help and contribute when they are guaranteed to be compensated,” he said. “He didn’t know what was going to happen. He only had faith in me just as much as I had faith in myself.”
He continued:
“He choked on his vomit. He suffocated on his vomit in his sleep. If it was drugs in his body or not, he still suffocated off his vomit.”
“I remember one time my manager wanted to get him a face [mask] for when you sleep because he would be choking on his own tongue. And this ain’t me justifying it.”
He also gave some words of wisdom to those who do use drugs:
“Yams — that was what he did. He got high. But to all those kids that’s out there on the Xanax and Oxycontin, and all that other sh-t, I’m not about to sit here and tell you ‘Don’t do that’ — you know what you’re not supposed to be doing.”
Meanwhile, A$AP Ferg told Mikey Fresh of Miss Info on how he’s dealing with Yams’ death:
“I feel his spirit every time I walk out the house,” Ferg tells VIBE. “I talk to his moms like every day. There’s not a day that goes past that I don’t think about Yams. Like I said on my Instagram, ‘Your body is just a shell, your spirit is here forever.’ I really believe that Yams is still here with us, rockin’ with us. He’s the reason why we’re always safe at our shows, and why we keep climbin’ to the top. He foreseen a lot of this stuff. He was Yoda, bro. He’s still here with us. You just don’t see the birthmark, but he’s in me.”
