Police are said to be in the early stages of an investigation after a New Jersey man claimed he was robbed at gunpoint by rapper DMX and his entourage early Sunday, NBC New York reports.

The 21-year-old man alleges that DMX identified himself during the encounter at an Exxon station in Newark, telling police that he had a brief conversation with the rapper before he pulled out a gun and demanded cash.

The man identified as DMX allegedly took $3,200 from the victim. He told police the entourage then jumped into four black Cadillac Escalades and drove away.

The young man followed the rapper, real name Earl Simmons, and was able to grab a license plate off one of the trucks, NBC reports.

It’s no secret that DMX has fallen on hard times following his success as the gritty-voiced standout in Ruff Ryders — he’s been arrested for drug possession, resisting arrest, and even spent some time in prison in 2010. The rapper’s Twitter post did indicate that he performed at a concert Saturday night in Newark, a hopeful sign that the rapper is on the right track.

Police have yet to positively identify the alleged robber as DMX as of Monday morning. No charges have been filed. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the tips line at 877-NWK-TIPS.
