Earlier this month, Kanye West put on a killer show for Yeezy Season 2 at NYFW, but the real story may have been backstage.

Amidst the models and high-profile names, 23-year-old Erika Lawson made her runway debut at the show after receiving a special invitation to walk from West and his collaborator, Vanessa Beecroft. The two supposedly wanted the line’s military style to be as authentic as possible, and it doesn’t get any more real than having actual military officers helping out.

Lawson and three other officers chosen from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy were also asked to choreograph the entire show. Lawson described the task to iD Magazine:

Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid were sitting in the audience bleachers watching us, and we were standing there and expected to come up with a marching routine and then teach it to them. It was two hours before the show was supposed to start. So we began trying to teach the models the basics of marching.”

However, the models couldn’t quite execute the routine to Kanye’s liking, so it was scratched. But the rapper was not left disappointed; Lawson’s runway presence apparently moved him to tears. She revealed:

“After the dress rehearsal, Vanessa came backstage and told me that when Kanye saw me walk out with the models he was so moved he had tears in his eyes. He was really touched to have a female military officer involved in his show and calling the commands.”
