During a recent Rolling Stone Magazine interview, the best rapper alive, Jay-Z, gave his opinion ont the five greatest songs of all time. When you see the list of the songs he chose, you might very surprised!  None of the five songs he chose were hip-hop records and most of them were recorded before most of us were born.

As we sit here and look at his decisions, we wonder why would he did not name at least one hip-hop record?  If you go to Brooklyn right now and ask anyone on the street what are the best five songs of all time, wouldn’t they name at least Biggie? However, what we like about Jay’s list, is that it challenges us to expand our minds.

We have to all realize that the word ‘music’ doesn’t only mean hip-hop.  We live and breathe hip-hop all day, everday, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t like Aretha or Marvin or the Rolling Stones.  The choices Jay-Z made were classic records that we all know and love.  Most hip-hop records nowadays are gone in a flash, so we might just have to agree with Mr. Carter on this one.  Check Jay Z’s Top 5 Songs Of All Time below:

1. Aretha Franklin ‘Respect’

2. Marvin Gaye ‘What’s Going On’
