Numbers are fun and scary, but when used to calculate and present facts, they can also make your day. Sometimes. Take for example, the numbers on alcohol consumption in America: do you know what the driest and wettest states are? Could you identify them on a liquor soaked map? Do you need beer glasses or Hennessey contacts? Don’t worry, we’ll point them out for you. After all, we are your designated driver.

Last fall, the National Institute on AlcoholAbuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) released a comprehensive study of alcohol consumption per capita for every state in the U.S. as of 2007. This i what they found:

New Hampshire:

New Hampshire is the drunkest state in the land. With no tax on alcohol, residents and non-residents alike flock to the nibbled pizza-looking shaped state to stock up on beer and hard liquor. According to the Wall Street Journal, the state “derives more revenue from wine and liquor sales than any other non-tax source.”

According to the IAAA, people from New Hampshire consume, on average, 48.7 gallons of alcohol a year, drinking beer (309.3 cans of beer, 4.3 gallon of spirits, and  29.4 bottles of wine) per person.

Montana

You’d see rainbows too if you live in Montana, the number 4 drunkest state in our fair Union. A 2007 Study by the NIAAA found that 20,000 students from 9th through 12th grade were binge drinkers. Here’s what else Montanan’s consumed.

Beer: 282.6 cans per person

Wine: 13.9 bottles per person

Spirits: 2.1 gallons per person

D.C.

D.C. is like the young son of a wealthy of guy who only wants his dad to notice him. FYI: Dad is the federal government and the kid is all the homeless people camped near the White House. Daddy’s always workin’ so D.C. acts up. We know D.C. is a city and not a state so save your stamps. The district comes in at # 5 on the list.

Total Alcohol Consumed: 41.6 gallons per person

Beer: 240 cans per person

Wine: 39.3 bottles per person

Spirits: 3.9 per person
