John Legend and the Roots‘ new collaborative album Wake Up! is now available to stream in it’s entirety on the NPR website. The project, which will see it’s official release on September 21, is comprised mostly of covers of classic  soul protest songs.

The tracks covered include Curtis Mayfield‘s ‘Hard Times,’ Roberta Flack/Eugene McDaniel‘s ‘Compared to What’ and Marvin Gaye‘s ‘Wholy Holy’. Guests on the album include Melanie Fiona and fellow Soulquarian and G.O.O.D. Music Labelmate Common.

The one original composition on the album, ‘Shine,’ is a searing ballad that is also featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary Waiting for Superman (which tackles the issue of education reform).
