Brigham Young University (BYU) basketball player Brandon Davies was suspended for violating his school’s honor code. The code states that students living on and off campus should “encompass the gospel of Jesus Christ, and will be honest, live a chaste and virtuous life and obey the law and all campus policies.”

Davies has been suspended from the basketball team for the rest of the season after admitting to having sex with his girlfriend.

STORY: Basketball Star Suspended For Having Pre-Marital Sex

Since BYU is a private school, students are expected to follow the rules dictated by the university. BYU is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so their students have to follow a strict code of honor. Students are required to be honest, abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and must attend church regularly.

Students at a private university, especially those that are steeped in religious tradition, have to follow the rules that the administration determines. The students and the university agree to a contract and if it is broken, the student will be penalized.

In the case of Brandon Davies, and according to the BYU code of conduct, the punishment does fit the crime. But how does BYU benefit from expelling Davies for the rest of the season? Does going to such a stringent private university mean you cannot live a private life?

If you think BYU’s policy is strict, you have to read about these other universities and their rules.
