Police charged a city man in connection with the brutal rape and beating of a woman in Chambersburg Tuesday morning after the suspect contacted police to say he was the one pictured in surveillance photographs published in local newspapers.

Jonathan Worley, 22, was charged after he contacted the Trenton Police Department to inform officers that he was the man depicted in surveillance photos printed yesterday.

Police said a 19-year-old city woman was attacked at just after 6:15 a.m. Tuesday on the 600 block of Liberty Street while she was walking to a gym on South Clinton Avenue. According to police, the suspect forced the victim behind a parked van in the parking lot of the Amigo Deli where he raped her.

Police initially released still images from a surveillance camera that caught the incident on tape. After reviewing footage from other cameras in the area, authorities said, police on Thursday released clearer, close-up photos of a man they believed to be the suspect.

‘The guy called up and said that’s me in the picture, there must be something wrong,’ said Lt. Stephen Varn when reached by phone yesterday.

After meeting with and interviewing Worley, detectives were able to establish enough probable cause to charge him with aggravated assault, kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, robbery and terroristic threats, Varn said.

‘This investigation resulted in (an) arrest due to the tireless efforts of the members of the Trenton Police Department working in conjunction with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the United States Marshals Service,’ said Lt. Christopher Doyle, commander of the Trenton Police Department’s major crimes unit.
