5-4-3-2-1: From Kanye West to MGMT

We here at the Global Grind offices listen to a lot of music. So much that it’s sometimes hard to keep track and process it all. A lot of times we only get to listen to a song once. Certain songs, though, we can’t help but repeat over and over – they’re just that good. In this new daily feature, we will be breaking down the day in music by the number of times we listened to a track. ‘5‘ is the track that had us go back and rewind more than once, the musical highlight of our day. ‘1′ is for the song we listened to once and then not at all, which may or may not be a bad thing.

Today was a very, very busy day, with new tracks surfacing from some of our favoirte artists. Narrowing it down to 5 was tough, but these are the tracks that had us talking the most, starting with the track that totally blew us away:

5. R. Kelly – When A Woman Loves

R. Kelly is a musical genius. People tend to overlook this fact when obsessing over his personal life, and, to be fair, his work over the past few years has been lacking (though Untitled is a pretty underrated album). However, when he drops songs like this, the first single off of his upcoming Love Letters LP (one of three he plans to release), there’s no denying his immense talent. ‘When A Woman Loves’ is a classic soul ballad in the vein of Sam Cooke, and Kelly sounds right at home here showcasing his incredible vocals. Hopefully this means we’ll be hearing less songs like ‘Superman High’ and more jams like this from now on.

4. MGMT – Congrautlaions (VIDEO)

MGMTs sophomore album Congratulations definitely threw fans for a loop. The experimental, downtempo sounds of the album were a far cry from the indie-funk of songs like ‘Electric Feel’ and ‘Kids’ from their debut Oracular Spectacular. Their latest video, for the title track ‘Congratultions,’ is definitely one of the coolest we’ve seen this year.
