At the kick off of the latest Apple event that took place today in California, we were kinda like “skip all that software talk, Apple, we’ve got our iOS 7 and want to know about the hardware!” But it turns out Apple had a whole lot more to serve up than just a new iPad.

One of the most exciting of the announcements was Apple’s reveal that their new desktop operating system, OS Mavericks X, is available for free download starting on Tuesday and is for all machines dating back to 2007. Earlier this month, Apple released OS X 10.9.

Aside from the new OS launches, this is actually a historical move for Apple, as it’s the first time in nine entire releases that the company steered away from giving the new software a cat-themed name (adios, lion)!

Apple also unveiled a new line of retina screen MacBook Pro computers. Check out their details according to Mashable:

The Macbook Pro 13-inch retina, which starts shipping on Tuesday, is priced at $1,299. It comes with a powerful, high-end fourth-generation Intel Haswell chip with Iris graphics and up to 9 hours of battery life. It comes with 2.4 GHx Core i5, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.

Meanwhile, the 15-inch MacBook can up 8 hours of battery life and is powered by the Intel Crystalwell chip for $1,999. It includes a quad-core 2.4GHz Core i7 and 8GB of RAM. It also starts shipping today.

And alas, the iPad had its time in the spotlight, as the company announced the lightest tablet in the world: the 1-lb iPad Air. Mashable reports:

The chip inside the iPad Air is the same as the one in the iPhone 5S, the 64-bit A7. Apple says the performance is double that of the previous generation. Compared to the first iPad, the iPad Air has 8x the performance and 72x better performance on graphics.

The pricing is the same as previous iPads, starting at $499 for 16GB, available in white, black and “space gray.” The iPad 4 gets discontinued, but Apple is keeping the two-year-old iPad 2 in its lineup, starting at $399 for 16GB.

It comes in silver and white and gunmetal and black (no gold here) and will begin shipping on November 1st.
