Nelson Mandela isn’t giving up without a fight.

The former South African president has been fighting a lung infection that left him bedridden and breathing through tubes throughout the year.

According to The Daily Mail, his daughter Makaziwe Mandela spoke to the South African Broadcasting Corporation and said that although her “Tata” is “not doing well,” he is teaching the family lessons in love and patience.

“Tata is still with us, strong, courageous. Even for a lack of a better word …. on his `deathbed’ he is teaching us lessons; lessons in patience, in love, lessons of tolerance.”

Mandela has been in the hospital since June with fans of the leader celebrating his 95th birthday with him in spirit. Mandela is under the care of 22 doctors and is reportedly on his “deathbed,” but his daughter says he isn’t giving up just yet.

“Every moment I get with him I’m amazed. There are times where I have to pinch myself that I come from this man who is a fighter even though you can see he is struggling, but the fighting spirit is still there with him.”

We send prayers to Madiba and his family.
