Guess we can blame NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio for dropping groundhog Punxsutawney Phil on his head for these six additional weeks of winter.
A warmer weather pattern is set to take over in the central and eastern parts of the U.S., but not before Winter Storm Rex rears its ugly head, becoming the 18th snowstorm the regions have witnessed in the 2013-14 winter storm season.
You heard that right. Eighteen.
By Tuesday morning, Rex was already dropping the icy, cold stuff in the Midwest, with thundersnow reported in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana Monday and snow in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
According to the Weather Channel, this is what to expect from the post-Valentine’s Day storm.
MIDWEST:
- Snow forecast: Additional amounts of up to 2 inches in northeast Ohio between 6 a.m. and noon Tuesday.
- Precipitation ends: By noon Tuesday in northeast Ohio. Snow has ended across the rest of the Midwest.
- Winds: Westerly winds gusting 25 to 35 mph in the above-mentioned areas.
- Impact: Some snow covered roads in northeast Ohio Tuesday morning. Primary highways should be in good condition where appropriately treated. A few airport delays and cancellations in Cleveland.
NORTHEAST:
- How much snow: Including what’s already fallen, total accumulations of generally 1 to 5 inches in northern West Virginia, northern Virginia, central Maryland, Delaware, and points northward, except for parts of New Hampshire and Maine where the development of a coastal low may boost totals above 6 inches. Coastal areas from Delaware to southeast Massachusetts will mix with or change to rain during the later stages of the storm. Also, totals of 6 inches or more may affect higher terrain in the Catskills, Berkshires, Worcester Hills, and southern Adirondacks. While storm totals will not be exceptional, some places will see brief bursts of heavy snow accompanied by thunder – i.e., thundersnow.
- How much ice: A brief period of freezing rain over parts of the central and southern Delmarva Peninsula early Tuesday with little accumulation.
- Snow begins: Tuesday morning in eastern New York state and most of New England, except for central, northern, and Down East Maine where it should begin Tuesday afternoon.
- Snow ends: Snow has ended for Baltimore, Washington, and most of West Virginia and Virginia. By midday Tuesday in western New York, southern New Jersey, most of Pennsylvania, and the Delmarva Peninsula. Generally Tuesday afternoon for northern New Jersey, eastern New York (including NYC) and western New England. Tuesday night for eastern New England, but only Maine will hold on to the snow past midnight.
In other words, where the hell is spring?
Oh, yeah. That happened.
