Twenty-four men in India were jailed on Friday for raping a 16-year-old who was kidnapped 18 years ago.

One of the men was sentenced to life and 23 others were given varying prison terms. The victim, who has not been identified, was abducted in 1996 and assaulted in homes, hotels, cars and public buses by the men over the span of nearly two months.

According to the prosecutor, the men convicted included a retired professor, lawyers, businessmen and government officials.

India’s latest tragic rape trial is not its first, by far. In December 2012, four men attacked and raped a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in New Delhi. She died days later from her wounds. A judge sentenced the quartet to death. In January, an Indian girl was raped by 10 members of a kangaroo court in a Birbhum village as punishment for having an affair with a young man from another community. And just last month, four were convicted of raping a photographer in August.
