So this happened.
On Wednesday, public works employees stumbled upon bags hanging from a tree in Yonkers, New York. After taking a closer look, they realized the bags were filled with more than two dozen dead cats dangling from the tree limbs.
The cats, according to authorities, seemed to be arranged ritualistically in the tree.
“Many of these cats were already decomposed, where there was only a skull or a skeleton and then you had some fresher ones where they had only been there three days,” said Ernie Lungaro, director of humane law enforcement at the SPCA and a former NYPD lieutenant.
According to the SPCA of Westchester, the cause of death for the felines was blunt force trauma to the head. But investigators are still trying to figure out who did it and why nobody noticed.
“It’s very strange. There’s a house next door and there are residences across the street. It’s a well-travelled little vacant lot,” says SPCA’s executive director, Shannon Laukhuf. “There’s a path that runs down to the businesses. Clearly, people have walked that path pretty often. It’s hard to believe that someone didn’t notice something. The smell of decomposition is overwhelming.”
An investigation continues.
