Last week, an exodus of people descended on Ferguson, Mo. to combat police brutality in Ferguson October’sWeekend of Resistance,” — a call of action to curb police violence and obtain justice for those affected.

The turnout of thousands of activists from all over the nation, young and old, wasn’t exclusively in support of Ferguson or Michael Brown Jr. — in fact, it was for a nation facing an epidemic of police violence that has taken the lives of so many innocents.

“Ferguson is everywhere,” Ashley Yates, co-founder of Millennial Activists United told GlobalGrind.

“This is a microcosm, that mobilization is key,” Tory Russell of Hands Up United echoed.

The two stopped by GlobalGrind just days before the Weekend of Resistance to talk mobilization and exactly who was amplifying and leading the movement for justice.

The answer? The youth. Watch our exclusive interview to hear Yates discuss how so many activist groups were formed by young people in the days following Michael Brown’s death and how much more effective their voices will be against politicians who promise, but haven’t delivered change.

“We’re not council members, we don’t want to be council members, we don’t want to be politicians,” Yates said. “We don’t think the change is going to come from inside of the system that’s already broken. So we’re here to apply that outside pressure and show them what it’s really about.”

“This is not a PR move for me, this is real life,” Russell added. “People were saving lives and people like [Eric] Holder and [Police] Chief Jackson were playing PR moves with PR firms and trying to dodge history.”
