Starbucks has taken another hit this week after actress Thandie Newton called out the coffee chain for displaying a statue of a Black child in a loin cloth offering Colombian coffee beans to customers.
According to Fox News, the award-winning actress spotted the figure at a Starbucks in London. After viewing the statue dressed in the cloth and safari hat, Newton snapped a picture and shared it on Twitter.
The Crash performer provided a straightforward comment about the garb, causing the company’s customer service Twitter account to respond.
While others agreed that the statue was problematic to the history Starbucks shares with Ethiopian coffee workers, others found no problem with the outfit.
Over the years, the company has been slammed for its high prices, while Ethiopian workers make less than $1 in profit. Fortune reports in 2005, representatives of the country filed a patent to trademark the areas of the three most popular coffee regions – Yirgacheffe, Harrar, and Sidamo – to secure a larger profit.
Starbucks has also been the subject of a viral video that showed a military wife confronting a barista who stole her credit card information to buy groceries.
