Really, Snapchat?

Snapchat has implemented a new filter to commemorate 4/20, and it’s landed them in hot water. The newly released “Bob Marley” filter transforms users into the reggae legend by digitally imposing his face (and dreadlocks) onto theirs.

Naturally, many people are accusing the app of promoting blackface, while also pointing out that linking Bob to merely marijuana essentially ignores the wider reach of his legacy. Users took to Twitter to voice their frustrations:

Kylie Jenner is also caught in the controversy after she used the filter in a series of videos today.

Feeling the heat, Snapchat released a statement on the filterer to Billboard, explaining that it was developed in partnership with Marley’s estate.

“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”
