Bill O’Reilly and Sean Spicer set off a social media firestorm on Tuesday after both men publicly disrespected two prominent and successful black women.
FOX news commentator O’Reilly said he couldn’t focus on a word that Rep. Maxine Waters said in a clip shown on Fox & Friends because he was looking at her “James Brown wig.” He later apologized, saying it was a “dumb” joke and that he respected Waters “for being sincere in her beliefs.”
As for White House Press Secretary Spicer, he had an issue with the questions being asked by American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan during a news conference at the White House. He accused Ryan of having a biased agenda and at one point told her “stop shaking your head.”
The comments made by both men are what Black women in the office have to face every single day. Whether you’re in Hollywood or Home Depot, most African American women in the U.S. have been dismissed, disrespected, or marginalized in the workplace. The Internet wasted no time highlighting some everyday injustices with the hashtag #BlackWomenAtWork.
