“If I Had A Son, He’d Look Like Trayvon.”

–President Barack Obama

That was President Obama’s response when asked about the case of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old young man that shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain on February 26th in Sanford, FL.

When the President made that statement it reasserted the reason why I voted for him: HE CARES!

He knows that Trayvon’s story is what people are talking about; he has his pulse on the conversations Americans are engaging in on Twitter, Facebook and across the social media landscape.

Trayvon’s case has become national news and for the President to say, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon” hit me like nothing ever before – considering in the coming months I’ll be a first time father.

I wouldn’t be surprised if President Obama took time out and called Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Martin, in the next few days.

The same can’t be said however, for his Republican counterparts who are aiming for his job in November. The Republican candidates for President haven’t uttered one word about Trayvon until the President said something, or their campaign managers told them they had to make a statement on the black kid killed in Florida.

Up until then, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich hadn’t said a word and you know why?

Because they refuse to notice the elephant in the room. They turn a blind eye, which shows that they don’t care about black kids getting killed because it doesn’t do anything for them, it doesn’t help them in any way to talk about Trayvon, and it doesn’t help their self-interest. Trayvon’s death doesn’t help their poll numbers.

This entire week the conversation has been about Trayvon and what have the Republican candidates been pre-occupied with? Fucking etch-a-sketches.

That’s what they were talking about while many marched, rallied and had their hoodies up for Trayvon.

It sickens me that people don’t want to believe the racism.

After President Obama’s statement on Trayvon, the positivity and hope that justice just might prevail flooded across Twitter and Facebook, but was quickly squashed when Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera said that if Trayvon hadn’t worn his hoodie the night he died he might still be alive.

That’s the Republican, Fox News response to the Trayvon Martin case: blame his hoodie.

Fox News has devoted no time, if any, to worrying about Trayvon and as soon as they speak on him, it’s a story about his hoodie causing his death.

They can argue all day about debt ceilings, contraception, abortions, gay marriage, religion, Common at the White House, but a black kid gets killed and his hoodie is to blame.
