Hold your breath ladies, Hollywood’s next leading man is here, and here to stay.

Jonny Weston, who has been in movies such as Chasing Mavericks with veterans such as Gerard Burtler and Taken with Liam Neeson, is finally staking his claim and stars as the lead in the upcoming Project Almanac. Jonny plays David Raskin, a teenager who, along with his group of friends, discovers time travel and runs into the perks and problems of dealing with the unknown.

Global Grind caught up with the green-eyed charmer and he talked about filming Project Alamanac, Insurgent, his favorite time period, upcoming projects with Zac Efron, and also revealed his favorite, easy-to-make meal.

On being cast as David in Project Almanac:

“The casting process was brutal for me. I auditioned for a few months, I really pushed for this one, I really wanted it. It had such an incredible pace and incredible mind blowing possibility of time travel which any person can go on for days and days imagining what they will do. On top of that it was just a really well put together script. I thought it was amazing. We ended up shooting and it was—surprisingly with the sound footage it was more than three-fourths of what had been on the page originally—and we improved a lot, but the script from the very start was just so good.”

On the challenges of his role:

“The stunts stuff was incredible. I lost a little bit of weight for the film because this kid isn’t necessarily athletic and what not so that was my greatest challenge actually—building this character, then staying in this character. Also the dark places that he goes in his mind when he is travelling back and these consequences start building up from the ripple effects of them time traveling. It became a little bit heavy and I take my roles seriously so that put me through a little ringer. Just the heaviness of contemplating that was a bit of a struggle.”

On the time period he would go back to if given the chance:

“I’d like to travel back to ’50s Hollywood. I love the elegance of Hollywood at the time. It wasn’t as much based on celebrity. It was about these incredible films and incredible actors who were all about the cause of making a meaningful film. It wasn’t as much about the red carpet and everything.”

On his custom role in Insurgent:

“The character is not in the books even. I don’t know how much I can say about this character, but he is in the Factionless faction. He’s kind of a hardcore guy, my character. It’s really cool to play the bad guy.”

On his upcoming projects:

“I just finished filming with Zac Efron on a film called We Are Your Friends, and we kind of play best buddies and it’s about the DJ world. I’m actually producing a film that I’m putting together now and it’s called Savage Youth. It’s a little bit of an intense, based-on-a-true-story type thing. It’s in the making and a little bit down the way, but that will be my next move.”

Jonny, also opened up about his move to New York from South Carolina when he was 18, stating:

“I moved to NY first because I wanted to jump right into the mix of how intensely energetic N.Y. is. I don’t know if I really planned on coming to L.A. but I’m glad I did. I think I’m just gonna go between both for the rest of my life. They both are just incredible cities.”

As a struggling actor, he had to ball on a budget; the 26-year-old shared his favorite penny-savvy meal, revealing:

“Peanut butter pancakes. Pancakes mixed with crunchy peanut butter, period. Just mix it in, slather the peanut butter on top then a cup of coffee and eat that 3 times a day.”

Project Almanac hits theaters on January 30.
