Joe Paterno, the former head coach of Penn State football, was reported to have died at the age of 85.  It was reported earlier this evening by the Penn State University newspaper, Onward State and spread throughout the internet by CBS Sports.

The student paper is reporting that players of the Penn State football team were notified by email of their former coach’s passing. After the sexual abuse scandal broke accusing his assistant coach Jerry Sandusky of molesting and raping various young boys, Joe Paterno was fired by the university.

However, Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told a New York Times reporter that the report is “absolutely not true.”

Nearly 30 minutes after the false news broke of Joe’s death, his son Jay took to Twitter to debunk rumors of his father’s passing.

The tweet was sent out from @JayPaterno’s Twitter account at 9:27 p.m. tonight.
