President Obama is set to back a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ compromise that could pave way for repeal in the military’s policy banning gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces. The White House announced on Monday that an agreement has been reached between lawmakers and the Defense Department.

Lawmakers on Capital Hill will now vote on an amendment to repeal the Clinton-era policy. Gay rights advocates are touting this as a ‘dramatic breakthrough,’ but are unsure whether or not they will get enough votes to pass both houses of Congress. The G.O.P. have vowed to maintain ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’.
