Black Action Retail Group (BRAG) celebrated its 41st Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala last Friday night at the Edison Ballroom in NYC and GlobalGrind was on hand to witness the celebration.

Created in 1970, BRAG’s mission is to promote the acceptance and participation of African Americans and people of color at all levels of retail and related industries, and has seen its membership grow in leaps and bounds.

The theme of BRAG’s 41st Gala was “Re-inventing The Future” and honored for their outstanding contributions to the community at large were Daymond John, CEO of Shark Branding, Simone Smalls Creator and CEO of Simone I Smith, LTD, Felita Harris, Sr. VP Global Sales, Donna Karan; Michael A. Todman, President, Whirlpool International, and Anthony Jerome Smalls, Vice-President and Director of Community Relations The TJX Companies, Inc.

Russell Simmons‘ Argyle Culture intern Trenay Henry was one of the scholarship winners of the night.

The Bronx, NY native, who is 17 and interested in both psychology and gender studies gushed, “It feels good!” after accepting her award. “I’m glad that I have money towards college; and it motivates me to make sure that I go to college,” the High School of Fashion Industries senior said.

“I thought this was an extraordinary event that pays tribute to blacks in retail,” said Dr. Benjamin Chavis, who presented the BRAG scholarship to Henry.

“I think BRAG is a very significant organization!”
