Getting rid of a day completely was no problem for the small pacific island of Samoa!

STORY: China, Taiwan Sign Trade Pact Linking Economies

According to the Associated Press, the country has transported itself from Thursday, December 29th, completely into Friday, December 31st.

Originally Samoa’s time zone was aligned with the United States’ to make trading with California more efficient. But Samoan government officials have decided that it is to a better advantage to align their time with other neighboring trading partners such as New Zealand, Australia and Tonga.

The move means more than jut trading advantages according to Prime Minister Tuila’epa Sailele Malielegaoi who said:

“We’ve got to remember that over 90 percent of our people emigrate to New Zealand and Australia. That’s why it is absolutely vital to make this change…”

This move will allow people in Samoa and their migrated family in surrounding countries to celebrate important events, such as birthdays, at the same time.

Government officials are working on making changes to maps and atlases in response to the time change. Officials also ordered employers to pay the people in Samoa for the missing Friday.
