The power will be back on for some 900,000 residents when Con Edison flips the switch back on for New Yorkers who lost power in Sandy’s “unprecedented” blackout – but unfortunately not for another week.

Power company officials vowed Thursday to restore power for the “vast majority” of New York City and Westchester customers by Sunday, Nov. 11 — but midtown and lower Manhattan will have power Saturday.

According to Senior Vice President John Miksad:

“We are doing our damndest to get power back as soon as possible…We have folks working around the clock to do that.”

As reported by the New York Daily News:

Scores of Con Ed crews fanned out around the city had already restored power to about 280,000 customers who lost power in the storm by 5 p.m. Thursday.

More than 620,000 households and businesses in the utility’s coverage area remained without electricity, including virtually all of Midtown and lower Manhattan.

Restoring service to the unlucky customers who don’t get power by the weekend will take another week or more. So far Con Ed has dispatched some 1,600 contractors and aid workers to cut trees, repair overhead lines, and fix underground equipment.

The company also deployed 1,000 safety workers to look out for electrical hazards at damage sites around the city and Westchester as they are hiring more workers to canvass Sandy struck areas around NYC.

Unfortunately we all must be patient as Con Ed workers toil away.
