It’s been months since Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus decided to call off their engagement and go their separate ways. While most people would be heartbroken and hauled up in bed for months, Miley’s doing just fine. In fact, the whole thing has made her stronger.

“I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years,” the 21-year-old told Barbara Walters as part of Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013. “But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy.”

Miley admits that she once felt anxious about being alone, but now, she cherishes each and every second of alone time she gets – especially because for a public figure, those moments can be few and far between.

“I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself,” she revealed.

Miley as undergone some major changes, both physically and mentally, since her Disney Channel days, but the biggest of those, she believes, is her ability to assert her independence.

“I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year,” she said. “I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can’t be yourself.”

Miley’s failed engagement hasn’t put her off the idea of marriage entirely. Though she’s living young, wild and free right now, she plans to settle down one day.

“I think I’ll want that in the time that it needs to be.”
