Vanessa Hudgens has embarked on somewhat of a reinvention. After chopping off her locks for her latest film, Gimme Shelter, and being the center of critique for her role in the controversial film Spring Breakers, Vanessa has successfully shaken off any bit of that Disney residue left on her.

That may be the reason why NYLON Magazine tapped the actress to cover their publication one more time, on the heels of the new release of her film. According to their short tease of the issue, NYLON editor Ashley Baker describes Hudgens as a “juice-swilling, hippy-dippy greens-eater,” who is taking everything–the fame, the challenging roles, the haters–in stride.

The issue doesn’t hit stands until the end of the month, but check out some excerpts from Vanessa’s interview below.

On Her Recent Transformations Onscreen:

“I don’t think it’s ‘good girl gone bad.’ I think it’s more ‘girl growing into a woman and being passionate and taking choices.’ I have so much work to do, and I think I will always feel that way.”

On Her Gimme Shelter Role:

“It was the first time I really stepped out of my control zone, physically and material-wise. I’m a little afraid of myself when I watch it.”

“I loved looking into the mirror and seeing myself with short hair and bad skin and tattoos. The uglier I could make myself, the more giggly I would get on the inside.”

On What’s Ahead:

“I know God’s plan for me is bigger than anything I could ever plan for myself. It allows me to not worry about the future or what other people think and just to be present and enjoy and try to shine as much as I can.”

On the public’s reaction to Spring Breakers

“You hear what you want to hear. If you’re not into something, be open about it. If you don’t like me, I don’t care.”
