If your parents shelter and protect you to the point that you can’t make good decisions, should you be held responsible for the bad choices you make? In the case of Ethan Couch, it seems the answer is no.

Yesterday, Judge Jean Boyd ruled that Couch would be given no jail time, and instead sentenced to 10 years probation and rehab after a drunken car accident that killed four people. The Huffington Post reports:

Couch was 16 at the time of the accident. His blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit for an adult and there were traces of Valium in his system when he lost control of his pickup truck and plowed into a group of people helping a woman whose car had stalled.

The rehabilitation center Couch will supposedly report to costs $450,000 a year and his parents will pay the fee. He will receive drug and alcohol rehab and can face jail time if he runs away or violates any terms of his probation.

Affluenza – the new term that describes being coddled by your parents to the point of irresponsibility – has been ripped by Defense Attorney Reagan Wynn. He commented:

It was ridiculous to think that we walked into court and said, ‘Oh, this is a rich white kid,’ and she decided to probate him.

Besides the four people who died, one person who was in the car with Couch is paralyzed and can only communicate by blinking his eyes, and another suffered numerous broken bones and internal injuries. How sad.
