The fashion world was shaking in their stylish boots this week.

According to Huffington Post, environmental group Greenpeace called out many luxury brands like Versace, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and more for using dangerous chemicals that can pollute waterways and harm consumers.

The report was published this week, just in time for Milan Fashion Week. The group named luxury brands Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Hermes, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. Many of the pieces tested positive for nonylphenol ethoxylates and pthalate, an acid that gives clothing elasticity.

Greenpeace said 12 of the 27 articles it tested contained residues of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), used in textile manufacturing which it said can break down into hormone-disrupting chemicals when released from garments during washing.

In five items, the group said it also found per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used to make garments water repellent. Five articles tested positive for phthalates, used in printing designs on clothing, and three for antimony, a compound used to manufacture polyester.

The environmental group is hoping that the companies will refrain from using the harmful chemicals in the future. A rep from Louis Vuitton agreed with the report and acknowledged their chemical usage:

However, Louis Vuitton said it shared Greenpeace’s concerns as it recognized “the intrinsic hazardous properties” of the chemicals used in the industry and said it was working hard to exceed current environmental standards.

Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Dior and Marc Jacobs didn’t comment on the matter. Check out some fashionistas who do look out for mother earth here.
