Students who gathered for the second annual Pride Day at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington D.C. were in for a major surprise when principal Pete Cahall stepped up to the microphone to address the crowd.

“I am a proud gay man that just happens to be the principal of Woodrow Wilson High School.”

Cahall, whose announcement was met with applause, garnered support from Mayor Vincent Gray and openly gay City Council member David Catania, who were both in attendance.

“I never made this declaration before because I did not want my kids to think differently of me or to not respect me,” says Cahall.

He says a recent birthday might have also swayed him to come out.

“I just turned 50 a couple weeks ago, and I’m tired of hiding.”

Cahall says he was inspired to be openly gay by professional athlete Jason Collins, who is the first openly gay NBA player, and Michael Sam.

“I have been in the shadows, but I am liberated today,” says Cahall.
