Social media has played an integral part in the way we communicate and generally interact with each other. Time has allowed us to show the best and worst uses for social media, but what happens when someone uses it for murder?

For some, the thrill of a wide-eyed audience on the other side of the computer screen can cause someone to kill. In the past decade, we’ve seen social media sites like Facebook and Twitter used as a bridge to enact murder. Just last week, a 17-year-old from South Carolina killed a classmate for sending flirty Snapchat messages to his girlfriend. Social media has also captured the harrowing moments in real-time. Before the shooting of Michael Brown and protests in Ferguson reached national headlines, descriptions, photos, and videos flooded Twitter the moment the shooting occurred.

Other crimes have been just as gruesome and heart-wrenching. From a mother killing her child and posting it to Facebook, to a reporter losing her life over her Twitter profile, here are some of the biggest social media murders from the past year that will change the way you look at your own digital footprint.

Humphrey reportedly asked the 29-year-old, “If you’re such a good friend, then why did you poke my missus?” Humphrey then punched Rovetto as the cab was stopped, sending him out of the car and causing him to land on the back of his head. Rovetto died due to severe head trauma. Humphrey was sentenced to four years in jail in October 2014 for the crime. [People]

After dropping a few rap lyrics, Brinsley posted a photo of his murder weapon and later of the blood on his clothes. The photos circulated around the web before the page was shut down by Instagram.

Mexico’s Maria del Rosario Fuentes Rubio lived her life as a doctor and citizen journalist before she was tracked down and murdered by the drug cartels she reported on in October. Rubio would use the name “Felnia” (Catwoman) to report on the dangerous crimes and gang violence going on in the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas. Police believe she was kidnapped and taken hostage after members from the cartel hacked her Twitter “Miut3,” posting messages that translated to: “Friends and family, my real name is Maria del Rosario Fuentes Rubio, I am a doctor, today my life has come to an end,” and “Shut down your accounts, do not risk your families’ lives as I have done. I ask your forgiveness.” The suspects then posted the above photo of Rubio and another with a gun shot wound to her head. [NY Daily News]

Kelly smothered her 11-month-old son with bed sheets last July, claiming that she couldn’t take care of him anymore. Kelly broke down the whole incident to the police, claiming after she committed the act, she took a long shower. I feel horrible knowing he passed away Am his Mother I was supposed to protect him I know his spirit will always be around me.” [NY Post]
