When Irishman Richard Hennessy created his cognac distillery in 1765, he had no idea his small business would survive the French Revolution, World Wars, and the Great Depression – but it did.
This year, Hennessy is celebrating 250 years of greatness with a global art exhibition spanning across five continents. Following the inauguration of their Hennessy 250 Tour at the Zaha Hadid Opera House in Guangzhou, China back in March, Hennessy’s global exhibition made its way through Moscow, Russia at the New Manege, before making its third and only U.S. stop today at New York City’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
Before the grand opening of the New York City exhibition, GlobalGrind was afforded the opportunity to privately tour the exhibition with an eighth generation member of the Hennessy family, Maurice Hennessy, art curator Hervé Mikaeloff, and Hennessy heritage expert Raphaël Gérard.
The Hennessy 250 Tour will showcase the history of the illustrious cognac brand while also exhibiting work and installations created by contemporary artists that evoke the spirit of the Maison’s legacy.
Orchestrated entirely by Hervé Mikaeloff, scenographer Nathalie Crinière, and Raphaël Gérard, the Hennessy 250 Tour is divided into six chapters with artists like Charles Sandison, Pierrick Sorin, Anton Corbijn, Constance Guisset, Tony Oursler, Xavier Veilhan, as well as artists like Futura, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Arik Levy and Tom Dixon, who were chosen for Hennessy’s more recent contemporary street art campaigns.
The Hennessy 250 Tour is scheduled to debut at the Circa Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa in August, and at an undisclosed location in Paris, France in September.
The free public exhibition in New York City is open for a mere three days – July 8-10 – with varying times between 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST.
