If you are a college student, why did you choose to attend the institution that you are attending? Did you enroll because it was what you were expected to do? Did you make the decision to further your education because no one else in your family had made it that far? Or were you like me and was told that college was the only way to secure some type of future for yourself?

I am a 2010 college graduate who is now enrolled in a masters program studying mass media and public relations. And guess what…I am UNEMPLOYED. I feel like a failure. Like there was something wrong with my resume that prevented me from securing one of the ‘top jobs’ in the industry. I am broke, anxious and bitter. And for my bitterness, I blame my professors.

See..despite the economic changes in the United States, professors are still preaching the same sermon. Go to school. Excel in your studies. When you graduate, a job will be waiting. WRONG! I have applied to countless positions, all over the country. All I managed to get was a temporary position at an office of uneducated people who condemned me for wanting more out of life. The empty promises my professors made to me and my colleagues are still in the back of my head. They never equipped us with the tools we needed to stand out in the sea of applicants. They never gave us a jump start at thinking of alternatives to the traditional nine to five. They lied like everything would be OK.

So if you are in college about to graduate, first let me say congratulations. I know first hand how much of a struggle and journey obtaining your first degree can be. But I also want to encourage you to think beyond securing a top-level position. While they are out there, trust that there are double or triple the number of applicants. Do all that you can to land internships and even think of non-traditional forms of employment.

Well… *sigh* … back to the job search. :-/
