There’s a hairy situation going on at Arizona State University.

Gender studies associate professor Breanne Fahs is encouraging her students to rethink the way they view hair. Fahs is offering female students extra credit if they choose to stop shaving their armpit hair.

Yeah, you read that right.

The professor is also offering male students extra credit if they opt to shave from the neck down. This uncanny extra credit exercise has been used since 2010 in Fahs’ classroom as a way for students to learn about gender norms and personal agency.

“There’s no better way to learn about societal norms than to violate them and see how people react,” Fahs told ASU News. “There’s really no reason why the choice to shave, or not, should be a big deal. But it is, as the students tend to find out quickly.”

Female students who are up to the extra credit challenge must not shave their pits for a 10-week period, and vice-versa for the men. The classroom experiment has received a myriad of mixed reactions from the public:

People seem to be really worked up about this, but remember guys, it’s optional.
