According to Ukraine’s military, pro-Russian rebels shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets in Eastern Ukraine on Wednesday. A military spokesman said the two Sukhoi-25 fighters were downed around 1:30 p.m. local time near Savur Mogila. No details were known about the pilots, but Ukrainian defense officials said the planes may have been carrying up to two crew members each. The incident comes just six days after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was brought down by a missile strike. Read about it here…[CBC]

A three-year investigation launched by the Justice Department revealed that 75 percent of the Newark Police Department repeatedly violated residents’ civil rights, used excessive force, and failed to discipline officers for a wide range of misconduct. The investigation, which placed the department under federal oversight, also revealed that 75 percent of pedestrian stops were unconstitutional (3 out of 4), and while blacks make up nearly 54 percent of the city’s population, they account for 85 percent of pedestrian stops and nearly 80 percent of arrests. The 9-year-old South African boy who married a woman in her 60s last year is doing it again, this time to make it official. Helen Shabangu wed Sanele Masilela in a second ceremony on July 12 in Kildare Village, Ximhungwe. The former disgraced owner of the Los Angeles Clippers has just sued everyone in his reach — on Tuesday he filed a new civil lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking damages from his wife, the NBA and NBA commissioner Adam Silver in their attempt to sell the L.A.
