The year was 1992, and music mogul Russell Simmons had just launched what would become one of the biggest brands to successfully target the urban community for many years to come—Phat Farm.

Fast-forward 22 years later, that community is all grown up, and so too, are the latest offerings from his Argyleculture line, what he describes as a collection that’s “classic with a twist” with a bevy of bright prints, plaids, and of course, argyle.

GlobalGrind went backstage to talk with the bossman himself just before he debuted his spring/summer collection during NYFW, and we chatted about the importance of being in a market that lacks other designers of color, as well as the very best dressed in hip-hop.

We also discussed the topic of police brutality in light of recent tragic current events like the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson.

And afterward, fashion folk and stylish stars all flocked to the Helen Mills Gallery, including the likes of Angela and Vanessa Simmons, Al Sharpton, Skylar Diggins, 50 Cent, Uncle Murda, Tahiry Jose, Flaviana Matata, and many, many more. Post-show, we caught up with Kimora Lee Simmons and America’s Next Top Model’s Miss J. Alexander to talk trends and wardrobe malfunctions.

Check out the interview and show up top before getting a glimpse at some of the looks in the gallery below.
