The Ohio State Buckeyes dominated the Oregon Ducks last night, snagging the first-ever CFP National Championship in Arlington, Texas with a 42-20 win. But back home in Ohio, things got a bit hectic.

Fans took to the streets in Columbus, Ohio, with as many as 8,000 people converging on the Ohio State football stadium, forcing their way inside and wreaking havoc. Police reported at least a dozen small fires — blazes started by those pouring out of bars. In one incident, the crowd tore down a goalpost at the stadium, also known as the Horseshoe.

Police in riot gear were eventually deployed to break up the crowds, using tear gas to disperse the revelers.

Police deployed three canisters of tear gas in front of the Ohio Union at about 1:15 a.m. local time and emptied the area, The Columbus Dispatch reported. It said officers also used pepper spray shortly after midnight, with some people leaving the area “with stinging eyes and runny noses.”

A handful of individuals were arrested, according to Senise Alex-Bouzounis, a Columbus police spokeswoman.

No one was seriously injured.
